Rail auctions are the most anticipated among logistics shippers, the owners of cargo, due to their potential to generate greater balance in the country's transport matrix, which is currently heavily dependent on road transport, responsible for almost 65% of trips. In 2025, according to data from the Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain (Ilos), railways will transport 18% of the national cargo.
“The expansion of the rail sector is fundamental, both for its capacity to relieve congestion on highways and for offering a more efficient, safe, and economical transportation system,” says Wagner Cardoso, superintendent of infrastructure at the National Confederation of Industry (CNI). It is estimated that rail transport provides, on average, savings of 40% compared to road transport. “We need competition between modes of transport; only then will we reduce freight costs,” says Luiz Henrique Teixeira Baldez, executive president of the National Association of Freight Transport Users (Anut).
