Director of the Libra terminal said that the arrival of BTP and Embraport caused a redistribution of cargo, but had little impact on prices
São Paulo – The director general of the Libra container terminal in Santos (SP), Roberto Teller, said that the arrival of Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP) and the Brazilian Port Terminal Company (Embraport) caused a redistribution of cargo among the competitors in the port, but with little impact on the prices practiced by the companies.
According to him, there was a repressed demand in the market due to the lack of capacity in the Port of Santos and the increase in supply allowed the absorption and rapid distribution of these volumes among the container terminals.
“Of course, when there is a balance between supply and demand, there are changes in market prices. But the impact was almost imperceptible at that moment”, said the executive, during a press conference at an event in São Paulo. There is an expectation regarding the prices practiced by the terminals with the entry into operation of BTP and Embraport, in the second half of last year, which will almost double the capacity of the Port of Santos for containers.
He said that the terminals have a good part of their revenues in other services that do not depend directly on the shipowners, such as container storage and NVOCC – a type of business that arranges the maritime transport of third-party cargo. Those other sources of revenue, Teller explained, offset the effects of competition on prices.
