This scenario created a very detrimental equation for the state-owned company's operating profit margins. "After letters ceased to be the core business, the era of major e-commerce companies subsidizing deliveries to consumers began, and the cost issue became very significant, given the operational burden on the postal service," analyzes Maurício Lima, managing partner of the logistics consultancy ILOS.

“They started using the postal service for things that weren't worth doing themselves, like making deliveries in small towns in the North, and hired private operations to make quick deliveries in big cities. For the postal service, this created a situation where you order a steak, but you share the plate with someone, and only eat the bone.”
