Curitiba has become the leading city among major Brazilian cities in terms of time lost in traffic. According to a survey by the Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain (ILOS), drivers in the capital of Paraná lose an average of 135 hours per year stuck in traffic jams during peak hours. According to traffic expert Bruno Abner, the time spent in traffic is mainly explained by the increase in the number of vehicles in the capital of Paraná.
The index was higher than that recorded in São Paulo, which comes in second with 132 hours per year. According to the 2022 Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the capital of São Paulo has 11.451.999 inhabitants, while the estimate for Curitiba is 1.829.225 residents. This means that São Paulo has about 526% more inhabitants than the capital of Paraná.
