You have to look outside – ILOS International Missions

 Every year, ILOS holds International Logistics Missions, which aim to train executives and leaders through technical visits, lectures with special guests and an immersion in the best logistics practices used by large companies in the world in three destinations: Europe , United States and China. Among the companies visited in Europe are strategic ports with efficient infrastructure, such as Rotterdam in Holland and Antwerp in Belgium, which function as Gateway of multimodal logistics corridors for continental service. The program also includes distribution centers, such as Nike's, which serves the entire European continent, and technology companies such as VanDerLand Industries. This is an experience that already has a date to happen. On this subject, we spoke with César Lavalle, responsible for the International Relations area at ILOS.

What is the purpose of the International Logistics Missions promoted by ILOS?

During the year, ILOS works in partnership with international institutions raising vanguard themes, best practices, use of technology, innovation and relevant content on the contribution that different organizations are bringing to Logistics. In this way, the main objectives of the Missions are:

  • Expand business knowledge globally and explore practices adopted in different countries, enabling participants to reflect on the implementation of solutions in the context of their companies;
  • Enable the participant to compare in practice the dynamics of the business context in each region and their different ways of reacting to changes in the world scenario;
  • Promote exchange and networking between communities that study and practice logistics around the world.

What is the contribution of each destination in terms of logistics? Which is drive of each?

In Europe, the most interesting is the organization, productivity and logistical efficiency due to the high operational complexity. It is worth highlighting the innovative use of multimodal transport (railway, highway and waterway system). There are many incentives for modes to integrate, as land and personnel costs on the European continent are much higher than in the United States.

In the United States, the business environment is dynamic, they prioritize results in the short term. They are not focused on whether the business model is the best. Unlike what Europeans and Brazilians think, who seek perfection, Americans manage to reinvent themselves quickly. If an installation fails, they are not afraid to do everything from scratch, if that is the most advantageous option.

China, in turn, has an impressive capacity for planning and managing large projects. We have a lot to learn from the Chinese. And with the differences of each country, each one within its vocation for logistics, as the trade exchange in the globalized world tends to intensify.

Brazil, within the logistical challenges it proposes, of investing in infrastructure and in multiple modes, such as roads, railways, waterways, needs to look to Europe. You have to look outside.

Can Brazil reach more advanced levels of development in Logistics? Can the solutions learned in International Missions be adapted to the Country?

A prerequisite for the country to take a step forward is to understand what happens contextually in other countries. Brazil is going through this moment. Need to improve in productivity and efficiency. The economy model based on consumption has run out, and the government is pointing to a change to an investment-oriented model. For this, it is necessary to make relevant investments in people, technology, processes and facilities, which, in the past, were made by other countries, and gives us a way to start and where to follow.

 What is the profile of the public that participates in International Missions?

We serve a diverse audience, both executives who are very good in the technical part, and looking for more experience in the management area, and executives who came from companies with a family structure and seek to learn best practices, methodologies and implement innovations.
