Rio de Janeiro is in a party mood! Visitors from all over populate the streets and Olympic arenas to follow the biggest sporting event in the world. Living in the Olympic city is a unique experience, and not talking about it is practically impossible. so much to Fernanda as much as Bernard already made their contributions to the impacts of the Olympics in the city, both in the logistics for holding the event and in the logistical legacy that the event will leave for the city of Rio de Janeiro. Regarding the logistics for the games, one fact stands out: animal transport for the equestrian events.
Equestrianism was marked in Brazilian history thanks to the rider Rodrigo Pessoa, who at the Athens Olympics in 2004 won a gold medal for Brazil, riding the famous horse Baloubet de Rouet. For the Olympics in Brazil, almost 300 horses were transported, an operation that will cost around 10 million dollars for the Brazilian Olympic Committee. This cost is understandable given the high value of the loads. For comparative purposes, the horse Palloubet D'Halong, heir to the Baloubet ridden by Pessoa, came to Brazil to represent the Qatar national team and was bought by the country's federation for 11 million euros, a stratospheric value for a horse that will only be the reserve of one of the country's knights.
At the end of July, the first wave of horses left London for our country. 34 horses were transported to compete in the equestrian events of the Olympics, 5 of them from the Brazilian ECC team, the Complete Equitation Set, composed of dressage, Cross country and jump. The flight of more than 10 hours was made with an Emirates Boeing 777-F, properly equipped to transport the animals. Special containers were used, where the horses are kept throughout the journey. Despite traveling upright, animals are not sleep-deprived during flight, as they are able to sleep in this position. And they rarely need sedatives. In addition to the temperature-controlled environment and the abundance of food such as fresh vegetables and fruits, the “athletes” are accompanied throughout the journey by veterinarians and caregivers.

Upon landing, the animals were taken to the live cargo terminal at Galeão airport. Still in the terminal, the microchip that accompanies them was read and their equine passports were checked, in addition to sanitary and visual inspections. Then, the animals were transported in special trucks directly to the Centro Olímpico de Equestria, in Deodoro, where they will not be allowed to leave under any circumstances during the entire event, to avoid any possibility of contamination and illness that could affect the performance of the valuable horses. . The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply is closely monitoring the logistical operation, from the unloading of the animals at the airport, the release for forwarding to Deodoro, to the isolation of the animals in Deodoro. Since April 2015, the Olympic Equestrian Center has been in a sanitary void, that is, no animals leave or enter the site. This measure ended only with the arrival of the competition horses. All these measures show the care taken so that there are no problems for the disputes, and they are what guarantee the spectacle witnessed by all of us here in Rio de Janeiro.
