Logistics – Another hostage to violence

The issue of public security has gained the spotlight in the news lately, with notable facts such as the federal intervention in the state of Rio de Janeiro and the creation of an exclusive ministry for the area. It is a subject of extreme importance and that unfortunately has not made progress in the country, and in addition to the fear it causes in the population, there is still a great burden on logistics as well.

We've talked on the ILOS blog several times about the problem of cargo theft and how the costs of burglary end up hurting every link in the supply chain, and it looks like the situation is only going to get worse. Last year, both the cities of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro broke records in this type of occurrence. Some data show the seriousness of the situation. In the capital of São Paulo, the number of annual robberies grew by 30% compared to 2012. In the state of Rio, there is an average of 29 cases of this type every day, that is, more than one per hour.

This scenario brings direct complications to logistics. An example of this is the impact on postal services. The company announced that it will start charging an additional R$3 fee for orders that pass through the state of Rio, whether they are posted or delivered in Rio de Janeiro, with the justification that there was an increase in costs to guarantee security. A recent survey by Folha de São Paulo showed that, in the capital of São Paulo, almost a third (29%) of the territory is considered a risk area, where deliveries are made with longer deadlines due to special needs, such as armed escort, or simply not are made, and it is up to the recipient to collect the order at an agency. Some e-commerce companies even refuse delivery to some zip codes in places with higher violence rates.

Logistics professionals work hard to fulfill the mission of delivering products in ever wider areas, with shorter deadlines and costs, and with more reliability for customers, but unfortunately the activity is yet another hostage to the great danger the country is going through. .
