Shared manufacturing in times of low demand

2017 has arrived! New Year New Life? For the economic situation in our country, it seems not. Even after the turnaround, which usually brings hope and optimism, we see that we won't be out of the crisis any time soon. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), projections for the Brazilian economy point to a growth of 0,2% in 2017, a more pessimistic number than the previous one, with an increase of 0,5% in the same period. Meanwhile, the other BRICS nations continue to grow strongly, such as India, with growth forecast for 2017 of 7,2% and China, 6,5%.

The industry serves as a thermometer for the performance of the economy, and the economic crisis can be clearly seen in its indicators. In 2016, according to data from the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), for industrial GDP (one of the components of GDP), we will have a year-end drop of 3,9%, which would be the third consecutive year with a drop of this indicator.

The severity of the crisis in the secondary sector is due to a series of factors, one of which is the intensive need for capital. For the purchase of machinery and equipment, for example, it is necessary to disburse large amounts of money, which results in the need to use the productive capacity to the maximum, in order to have a return on the invested capital. In this respect, according to CNI data, the average percentage of utilization of the industry's installed capacity stood at 76,6%, which points to a high level of idleness, generating huge losses for the sector.

To help entrepreneurs who find themselves in a difficult situation, seeing their idle parks depreciating without any financial return, a Brazilian start-up stands out. Peerdustry is, in its own words, “the platform that connects companies with idle machines with companies that need machine hours”. It works as follows: the person who fits into one of the two ends served by Peerdustry registers on the site, explaining the demand or supply that they have. The site takes care of trying to unite the two needs. In this way, the businessman with the idle machine can generate an incremental revenue and the businessman who uses the machine can produce his products and meet the demand of his market. It is an intelligent way of trying to unite two existing needs in Brazilian industry today. Peerdustry is already being called the “Uber” of the industry.

In an analogous way, the thatiana  mentioned in a previous post the company Flexe Warehousing, which works in a similar way to Peerdustry: a platform that connects people who need storage space with others who have extra space. The idea of both start-ups is to reduce costs by reducing waste.

Idleness configures a type of waste that must be avoided, even outside the crisis. To go further, in recent years we have seen that the factory floor has become a focus for industrial management, in the quest to increase productivity, improve quality and for business success in general. In the book “The Machine that Changed the World”, by James Womack, Daniel Jones and Daniel Roos, the term Lean (lean, in Portuguese), which has practically become a jargon among managers and industrial leaders, makes reference to the good practices observed in a study of the world automobile industry, which pointed to the Toyota Production System as the example to be followed. the thought Lean influenced and influences, until today, the form of management of the main companies. To name a few examples of practices Lean, we are focused on delivering value from the customer's point of view, pull production, continuous improvement mechanisms and total quality.

the philosophy Lean is the central theme of the online course offered by the ILOS of Industrial management . With a mix of theory and practical applications, the course offers a range of tools and techniques for industrial operations managers. It is worth checking!
