The lack of infrastructure on the roads, coupled with the time away from home, also leads drivers to switch from trucks to city work. “It’s easier to be a ride-sharing driver, with a lower investment required. A truck, even a second-hand one, can cost up to R$ 1 million,” says Maurício Lima, managing partner of ILOS (Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain).
Another advantage of ride-hailing services is the proximity to home. “In the US, for example, where there are also many highways, road transport doesn't cover very long distances. It's rare to find a route longer than 400 or 500 kilometers. In Brazil, there are still many routes of 2.800 or 3.000 kilometers being covered by road transport,” says Lima.
