From 2023, Brazil will enter a new era of trucks. No, it still has nothing to do with electric trucks, although some automakers are already moving down that path. On January 1, 2023, all trucks leaving the dealerships must comply with the P8 phase of Proconve (Program for the Control of Air Pollution by Motor Vehicles), that is, they must meet the emission levels of pollutants (environmental and sound) stricter than the current ones.
Phase P8 of Proconve is the equivalent of the Euro VI standard, in force in the European Union since 2014, which obliges automakers to offer trucks equipped with more technologically modern engines. Despite pressure from automakers to postpone the implementation of the P8 phase, it has already entered into force in January 2022 for the approval of new vehicles, with sales being mandatory only from 2023.
But, in practice, what makes Proconve 8 different for companies' operations? Well then. Nothing for those who have a sufficient and renewed fleet, but it will possibly increase costs for those who intend to buy new vehicles. At the time of the implementation of Euro 5 in Brazil (phase P7 of Proconve), truck prices rose by 15% due to the new technology, which should happen in a similar way with vehicles in phase P8.
However, the increase in costs in the first moment can mean a reduction in operating costs in the long term. In tests with different models of Euro VI trucks in Europe and India, there was a reduction between 7% and 14% in diesel consumption compared to Euro V models. than the S-10, but less polluting, and which also requires the use of the Arla-500.
Another possible impact of Proconve 8 is on the truck and implement market. The expectation is that there will be anticipation of purchase in the second half of this year by fleet owners who had plans to invest in new vehicles and want to escape the higher prices. Good for the truck and implement industries, which started 2022 with numbers below those of the previous year and expect to recover in the second half to confirm the initial growth projections. The doubt, however, remains in the ability of industries to meet a possible increase in demand in view of the difficulties that some have been encountering in acquiring certain inputs.
And your company? Are you going to anticipate the purchase of new trucks to avoid a possible price increase or are you going to wait and bet on more economical vehicles that have less impact on the environment?
